"We are ignorant of the meaning of the dragon as we are of the meaning of the universe, but there is something in the dragon's image that appeals to the human imagination, and so we find the dragon in quite distinct places and times. It is, so to speak, a necessary monster, not an ephemeral or accidental one, such as the three-headed chimera or the catopeblas."
Borges, Preface to the 1957 Edition of the Book of Imaginary Beings

The Book of Imaginary Beings is an odd little gem that Borges first compiled in 1957. It's a modern bestiary of all kinds of strange and fantastical animals, from the Tigers of Annam to the Monkey of the Inkpot. Spanning from ancient Greek myths to the journals of enlightened travelers, from the shores of Malaysia to the fauna of the Americas, the breadth of his entreprise was gargantuan.
There are no official illustrations for these beasts, though several publishers have chosen different original title covers. Thus, it is an open invitation for all artists to contribute to Borges' creative entreprise and give new life to these beasts with their paintbrush.
This is both a creative and charitable endeavor. The 5 pounds entry fee will contribute to support one of the local charities of Oxford. We will choose a different every month, in order to reach as many different types of NGOs as we can.
Just send us an email with your name and info to sign up. You can then pay the entry fee and upload your illustration. Your picture will become part of our online gallery while we accept submissions!
